Finnmark is home to long-distance dog sled races in Europe, and sled dogs are an integral part of life and travel in this region. This expedition offers an introduction to dog sledding as it is practiced in daily work with the dogs and in Arctic conditions.

The experience focuses on the relationship between humans and dogs, practical learning, and time spent in the winter landscape. You will learn how to prepare a sled team, handle the dogs, and take part in the routines that support their wellbeing and the progress of the journey.

Accommodation is in a heated gamme tent in the wilderness and in a local lodge. All necessary equipment and training are provided to ensure you are prepared for the activities.

Itinerary

  • Arrival at Lakselv Airport and transfer to the kennel. You are welcomed into the daily environment of the dogs and the team. In the evening, you take part in a short sled dog tour in the local area to become familiar with the equipment and the dogs. Overnight stay at the lodge.

  • Each day begins with breakfast, feeding the dogs, and preparation of the dogs and sleds. The route varies depending on snow, weather, and terrain conditions. The journey may pass through forest areas, open plateaus, frozen rivers or lakes, and coastal landscapes. You will drive your own dog team, shared with another passenger, and take part in the daily care of the dogs throughout the expedition. Meals are prepared outdoors during the journey using basic field equipment. Evenings are spent at the camp, where the dogs are cared for, fed, and settled for rest.

  • Breakfast and a last cuddle with the dogs before transfer back to Lakselv Airport.

This provider places special emphasis on maintaining a balanced age structure within the pack. This ensures that all dogs entering retirement can spend the rest of their life on the farm and remain part of the community until the very end. The small group size allows for individual care. In addition, all male dogs are neutered to prevent unplanned litters. Also noteworthy are the two scheduled rest days each week, giving the dogs time to recover and recuperate.

  • Flights and alcoholic drinks

    Thermal underwear (wool), a fleece or wool sweater, ski pants, thin wool socks, personal clothing, a neck warmer, sunglasses or dark goggles, a winter jacket, toiletries, and thin working gloves (wool or fleece).

    What an incredible experience with Pirate Husky! We chose the 3-day/2-night expedition, and it was fantastic. We really got to experience their daily life, learn about the dogs, and discover how to drive the dog sled step by step. You should plan for 5 days, as we started with a short practice run on the first day, and then the next day we set off for 3 days in the mountains, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

    Our guides, Gøran (Norwegian) and Emilie (French), were amazing. We felt very safe and supported in a caring and attentive environment, but also with a lot of independence – I loved it.

    The campsite in the wilderness was wonderful. We were even lucky enough to see reindeer roaming freely, as well as a few glimpses of the Northern Lights despite the cloudy weather!

    The dogs are adorable, full of life, eager to go on excursions, and thrilled to be in the snow. It's incredible to see them enjoying this environment so much.

    Pirate Husky provided thermal suits, mittens, and fantastic waterproof boots, and Emilie gave us excellent advice on the first day to help us prepare for the excursion.

    In short, everything was well thought out! It's an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life, and I recommend it 200%! Thank you Emilie, thank you Gøran, thank you Mali (and thank you also to our amazing dog team: Movttet, Lulli, Bassit, Gassku, Siellu, Geassi, Dragen, and Nitro!)

    What an experience! We just completed a four-night expedition with Pirate Husky in Børselv, Finnmark. From start to finish, everything was perfect.

    The experience with these adorable dogs (sledding, feeding, harnessing, picking up waste, and massages after the long excursions) was fabulous, and we spent many special moments with them – you'll definitely find your favorite(s).

    The days on the sled were magical, and the two nights of Northern Lights for New Year's were truly exceptional. The tent was very warm and comfortable, and the traditional Norwegian cuisine, prepared with local ingredients, was delicious.

    A huge thank you to Mali, her family and friends, but especially to Goran and Emilie for guiding, training, and accompanying us, for ensuring our safety, and for giving us this unforgettable experience.

    As a family, we had a fantastic stay with Pirate Huskies. One of our sons is a huge husky enthusiast and had always dreamed of trying dog sledding.

    We discovered Pirate Huskies through a recommendation, and after our four days there, we wholeheartedly recommend them.

    Emilie and Gøran, our guides, introduced us to the animals and the art of dog sledding.

    On the first afternoon, we started by feeding and harnessing the huskies, then we went for a short, hour-long ride right in front of the house. We even had the chance to drive a sled behind the lead sled with Emilie.

    The next morning, we helped load the dogs, then we drove for about thirty minutes up the mountain to the starting point of our three-day excursion.

    The experience of being surrounded by nature, in the snow-covered mountains, under a bright blue sky, pulled by eight friendly and energetic huskies per sled, was simply fantastic!

    My son and I quickly learned to take turns driving the sled, comfortably seated inside.

    At camp, we helped feed and cuddle the huskies and prepare the sleds. Otherwise, we relaxed around the campfire or, when it was too cold, in the heated tent.

    We also enjoyed Norwegian cuisine: reindeer with potatoes prepared in various ways for dinner.

    It was three wonderful days in the mountains.
